Annual Dinner, Golf Outing and AGM report for 2011

Our annual dinner and golf outing took place again this year at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf resort on Friday the 9th Sept.

The event was hosted by our President John Connolly and again broke all attendance records.

The centrepiece of the event was the presentation made by our President on behalf of the college to our former rugby Internationals Seamus Dennison (1967) and Vinny Becker (1966) in recognition of their achievements on the playing field. Who can forget that stunning tackle by Seamus on Stu Wilson at Thomond Park.

Vinny’s achievements on the Athletics field, in representing his country, was also honoured.

The day took off with the golf competition on the magnificent Adare track where another record was broken in that we had 40 golfers participate. The winner of the Fr. Senan Timoney cup was Vinny Becker (1966) closely followed by Brian Punch (1966) with Con McNamara (1968) making the rostrum in third place. The best gross was won by Michael D. Lynch(1965) who for the second year running travelled over from the States for the event.

Special thanks to John Power of Leinster rugby fame and Victor Ryan for organising the golfers on the day.

This event was followed by our AGM which featured a conference call to Senan Timoney who was unable to attend the event this year. This is the first time in memory that Senan was unable to attend and the boys really appreciate his wonderful support of the Union over many years which was acknowledged by applause that went on for minutes. We would like to extend our thanks to Charlie McCormack for his expertise in setting the call up.

The main feature to come out of the meeting was our commitment to improve the Web site and get pupils feedback on what they might like to see us cover. A fund raising was organised by Roger Fitzgerald and we now have sufficient funds as a result to make a major impact and improvements on the site which is now work in progress.

Dr. Seamus O’Flynn (1967) was elected as our new President.

Dinner followed immediately after and 65 pupils and guests sat down. The event also featured the 45th reunion of the class of 1966 where many from that year were in attendance thanks mainly to the excellent work of our Treasurer Stewart Roche and Vincent Becker. This trend of celebration was set off by the class of 1965 in the previous year so the mantle has been handed down.

The festivities carried on late into the night and everyone present had a great evening.
We will be advising the date and times of our 2012 event and would ask that you watch the web for information which will be posted shortly.
