Desmond Cantwell RIP (Mungret 1953-1957)
It is with great sadness that we report from England of the recent death of Rev. Fr. Des(mond) Cantwell, SDS. Past pupils of the mid 1950s will remember him with great affection, being extremely affable and very popular with his peers. He was a lay boy pupil from England of Irish extraction.
On returning to England following his Leaving Certificate exam he entered the Salvatorian Order of priests and spent the last 30 years or so in a pastoral role as Parish Priest in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire where he died after a short illness.
It may be of interest to note that during his time at Mungret he was proud of the connection with his first cousin, a rising star in international soccer circles, Cork born Noel Cantwell. Noel, already a notable soccer figure both in Ireland and England, became a player for Manchester United and captained their team in the early years of the 1960s. He is a attributed to having the club recover their despondent morale following the Munich air disaster in 1958.
