Mungret College Past Pupils Annual Dinner Report September 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Following the cancellation of our 2020 dinner due to Covid, the 2021 annual dinner event went ahead at the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel in Castletroy on Friday the 10th Sept. On the invitations of our outgoing Presidents Willie Nash (2020) and Garrett Barry (2021) the event broke all records by way of attendance in that 70 past pupils sat for dinner. This was due in the main to the tremendous turnout from both the classes of 1970 and 1971 who were celebrating their 50th anniversaries. Congratulations to the class organisers who went out of their way to get the numbers back. Their work was very well rewarded.

The day got under way with our golf outing which this year was changed to Nenagh Golf Club. Whilst the weather was wet and windy some 32 golfers braved the elements. The winner of the Fr Senan Timoney Cup went to Ciaran Smyth with a score of 39pts. He was followed in by Bill Frazer on 38pts with third place going to Karl Roche also on 38pts.

Our annual AGM was held back in the hotel followed by dinner. The PPU welcomed Fr John Guiney representing the Jesuits who was also in the class of 1971. We also got good representations from our sister colleges who were joined by Liam O’Mahoney the principal of the  Mungret Community College who accepted our bursary on behalf of the school.

Our incoming President Judge T E O’Donnell (1971)  took the chain of office on the night which was befitting given that his class were celebrating their 50th anniversary at the event.

The Council organised a walk about in the college on Saturday morning and our thanks go to both Liam O’Mahoney and William Sheehan of the Christian Centre for facilitating the trip.

Our dinner and golf dates arranged for 2022 back in the Kilmurray have already been advised and with the class of 1972 celebrating their 50th we look forward to seeing them back in numbers in September.
